Understanding Remote vs Distributed teams

In your journey of finding remote jobs you’re likely to find two types of teams: distributed and remote. Even if they are used interchangeably, you need to be aware of the difference.

This talk by Matt Mullenweg, CEO of Automattic, is a good talk about Remote vs Distributed, but also remote working in general. I highly recommend watching it. Or if you prefer text, continue your reading.

Remote is used to describe teams having the “essential” people in a country/office and some minority working from somewhere else. Example: companies having customer support as a remote team somewhere else.

Distributed is used to describe teams working on something together, on the same level, and all being remote.

When joining a team, I would suggest joining a distributed one.

In remote teams, it’s easy to be out of the loop. Sometimes unconsciously. As people are getting used to talking about things in the office.

Distributed teams are more used to the idea of having people all around the world. So decisions and talking are all done with everyone in the loop.
